🏆 FIDE ELO Rating Calculator – Chess Rating System Explained

The FIDE ELO rating system is the official method used worldwide to measure a chess player’s strength. Developed by Arpad Elo, the system is adopted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to rank players based on performance.

Every time you play a rated chess game, your rating changes depending on your opponent’s rating and the game result (win, draw, or loss).

This page explains how the FIDE ELO system works and provides an easy-to-use calculator to estimate your new rating.

📖 How FIDE ELO Rating Works

The rating system uses a formula based on expected performance:

Formula:

New Rating = Current Rating + K × (Score – Expected Score)
  • Score = 1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw, 0 for a loss
  • Expected Score = 1 ÷ (1 + 10^((Opponent Rating – Player Rating) / 400))
  • K-Factor:
    • K = 40 → New players (below 30 games)
    • K = 20 → Experienced players (rating < 2400)
    • K = 10 → Top players (rating ≥ 2400)

🎯 Example Calculation

If your rating is 1600 and you play against a 1700-rated opponent:

  • Expected Score = 0.36
  • If you win: New Rating = 1600 + 20 × (1 – 0.36) = 1612.8
  • If you draw: New Rating = 1600 + 20 × (0.5 – 0.36) = 1602.8
  • If you lose: New Rating = 1600 + 20 × (0 – 0.36) = 1592.8

📊 Why is FIDE ELO Important?
